Details
The carriage house on King’s Oaks Farm where Alex Cohen now paints was once an apartment occupied by itinerant airmen. Alex’s grandfather was the aviator who cut a runway through the fields on the farm, attracting these adventuring guests. While the airfield has been dormant for a number of years now, Alex maintains his vivid memories of this place where flying machines frequented through the Bucks County landscape. There is something wondrous about that conflation of adventuring with a rural setting that turns a landscape into a frontier and place of possibilities. This sense of place makes the farm and Bucks County a vital source of inspiration for Alex. The carriage house studio is as much a workspace as a muse for the painter. While the subjects and handling of Alex’s paintings may range widely, they are all embedded with a sense of place and reflection of the artist as witness. He works alternately from life and imagination using realism to hone in on moments of mystery. Ultimately the real and invented become fused as a frontier where adventure is always welcome.
